PRACTICE TASK - 'HOW TO KILL SOMEONE'
This was our practical assessment showing a successful killing scene with a character appearing to get stabbed and no one actually getting hurt. In this short sequence we used high angle shots of the victim to represent vulnerability and low angle shots of the killer to show his power and control. We used point of view shots to accentuate and emphasise the victims panic and struggle; also the hand held camera was useful for making rapid movements as the victim is looking up at the killer and scrambling on the floor to get away. This task proved difficult for us as it was our first attempt at shooting a full sequence. However we feel as a group that we achieved a good range of shots and met the task requirements.
This task also required editing and as it was our first time editing, naturally we encountered some trial and error before the task was ready. We learnt during editing that the soundtrack can make a huge difference. We initially started with a soundtrack that we had found on 'youtube'. However after some consideration we realised that the sound we had chosen was asynchronous and made the sequence look comical. This was not our desired effect so we researched a better soundtrack and the whole thing came together a lot better. When we went out to film we lacked a clear structure to our ideas therefore we had to improvise a bit and this taught us a lesson that you should always go out with a clear plan.
Below you can view our original edit which proves that a good soundtrack can make a great difference when it comes to building the tension in a horror film and improving the overall effectiveness of the moving image to the sound effects.
