Production companY RESEARCH
Here are some examples that we have researched of successful production company logos and why we think they are so successful:
I think that the Twisted Pictures production company logo is so successful because it has so many elements that instantly relate to the horror genre. The first sound that is heard the sound of knives slashing, which instantly makes the audience think murder and blood. The text is in the centre of the screen surrounded by darkness, and darkness also has connotations of fear and no escape. The way that the barbwire aggressively wraps around the text creates imagery of a victim being trapped, tied up and tortured with no escape. The dagger rapidly slashing down at the end finalises the entire impact of the logo and gives the audience a feeling of fear before the film has even started.
I think that the Ghost House Pictures production company logo is so successful because it also has instant sounds that relate to the horror genre. It uses low key lighting to set the tone of fear and loneliness which are the qualities of conventional horror films. The ghostly sound effects create an eery mood to the setting as there is a shot of a keyhole which creates tension and instantly makes the audience feel fear before the film has even started. The picture of the skull peering through the keyhole in between the 'Ghost' and 'House' text also sets the mood for the film, as which ever way you turn it appears that it is looking right at you, making the audience feel as they are being watched by an unwanted visiter. The name 'Ghost House' also has an instant affect on the audience, as it has connotations of unexpected events that they won't be prepared for.
I think that production company logo for Blumhouse Productions is the most effective because there is so many conventional horror moments happening at one time as an audience you wouldn't know where to look and what to expect. The many sound effects for each action also add to the element of surprise and create an uneasy atmosphere. This production company also uses low key lighting with there logo, which I think is so popular and successful because the audience cannot fully see everything that is going on, also adding to the effect of surprise and the thought of not knowing what could be there.
The production company is the funder of the movie. It deals with budgets, cast, script and mainly just organising the movie. The production company is usually in charge of either fund raising for the movie, but can sometimes be funded by a partner company. You will find the production company at the beginning of the movie directly after the distribution company logo. In our course we were required to invent our own production company. We came up with D.O.A productions (dead on arrival ) and we decided to use a flatline monitor in our main image. We did this to emphasise the horror genre as the flatline monitor instantly giving the image of a victim in hospital; this links with our movie as we have a zombie captured, in a hospital-looking lab room which a scientist testing on it. You can see the finished clip above.
