Makeup and Costume
When planning the makeup & costumes we knew a lot of fake blood would have to be involved, so we made loads of it using the best recipe that was shown on the 'Blood Workshop'. Jess had the most amount of makeup with the most affective and dramatic result as she was cast as 'Head Zombie' so she had to stand out amongst the other zombies. We used tissue paper and PVA glue together to make the wounds look like bits of skin hanging off the zombies faces. We based these wounds with red and black eyeshadows to create a bruised affect. We then added lots of fake blood, filling the wound to create the final result shown in the picture on the left. Jess had extra makeup on her eyes and nose to dramatise her look; she had a great amount of black eyeshadow on her eyes, all smudged in to make her look rough and more scary looking. We also gave her extra cuts and bruises with the makeup to state the point that she was 'Head Zombie' and had to look the most affective. To style our hair in a 'zombie style' we backcombed it a lot to give it lots of volume and used lots of hairspray; this made us look like we had been attacking people.
When it came to the costumes we wore normal, everyday clothes, ripped them and covered them in fake blood. We wore these clothes and not over-the-top costumes because we are supposed to be playing normal, average people that have been infected by this 'zombie disease' and then started attacking people. By doing this we all looked individual and in the film it could make the audience feel like they could either get infected or attacked as this could happen to anyone; it doesn't pick specific people. We all chose to wear either white or a fairly dark colour and not black for our costumes so that it would contrast with the dark blood and make it show up more; also white is normally seen as having connotations of innocence and purity which suggests that these people were innocent people before they got infected, and now they are the complete opposite. When applying the fake blood to the costumes we applied it so it looked like its had dripped down from our wounds and onto our clothing, we threw it over each other to achieve a more random 'splatter' affect, and we also put hand prints of it on each other's tops giving the affect that the victim had been struggling and trying to push the zombies off them, creating handprints of fake blood.
Before we did the zombie makeup, we researched difference techniques on YouTube to help us with the way we look for our filming to get best, most affective result. Below is the most helpful video we found:
This video was the most helpful for our task because it showed a simple, step by step plan of how to do it which made it easy to follow. We chose to research this material on YouTube because we realised that fact we can watch the video as the makeup is being done and pause and rewind it whenever we needed to really would help us with the makeup and costume preparation; we were able to take our time on the makeup to perfect it and get the best result. This specific video was also the most efficient because it used normal and inexpensive materials such as tissue paper, PVA glue, fake blood, eyeshadows and red, black and white makeup pencils. This meant that we could completely follow this video and the steps shown exactly how they did it because the materials used are easy to get and not expensive.
For the lab scene where I was playing the zombie that had been captured to be tested on, we used low key lighting in the room so we needed my makeup and costume to stand out. We watched a few youtube videos to research how to do makeup that really stood out and would create a strong effect. This is the video above that we found and followed to create the 'zombie teeth'. We also used white contact lenses for this scene, so that when I opened my eyes it was more dramatic and they really stood out, especially with the contrast from the dark room.
I wore a white lab coat which we covered in fake blood, the white also stood out in with the low key lighting and when we added the effects in editing, the blood stood out as well, creating a very effective contrast in colours and lighting.
